Description

This pennant is designed for the Christmas Season, a time celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Son of God, and the beginning of new life for the fallen human family. The text comes from the great Christmas hymn, O Holy Night, which was derived from the poem, Minuit, chretiens, written by Placide Cappeau. The line wonderfully captures the meaning of this pivotal moment in the drama of salvation history. After centuries of languishing in slavery to sin, the human family and every member of it, now has the opportunity to live the purpose for which God had created us in the very beginning. At creation, God created the human creature in His very own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26), endowing it with the purpose of becoming a partaker of His Divine Life, as St. Peter writes in his Second Epistle (2 Peter 1:4). This line of the hymn so beautifully impresses upon us how after centuries of struggling under the weight of sin, the human family had lost a sense of its high calling and dignity. Only a Divine act could reawaken the human creature to its true value, and this is precisely what takes place when we gaze upon the face of the infant lying in the manger at Bethlehem. In the face of the Divine Son, the human family receives the message that we were made for perfect relationship with God and so intensely does God desire for us to fulfill our created purpose, that He humbles Himself to be one with us so as to make us one with Himself. It is this revelation that awakens the human family, which after centuries of misremembering who we were, once again understands our true worth in the very depths of our soul.

The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council put it this way in its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et spes,

The truth is that only in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light. For Adam, the first man, was a figure of Him Who was to come, namely Christ the Lord. Christ, the final Adam, by the revelation of the mystery of the Father and His love, fully reveals man to man himself and makes his supreme calling clear. It is not surprising, then, that in Him all the aforementioned truths find their root and attain their crown (22).
