The late great Fr. Joseph Ratzinger, also known as Pope Benedict XVI, called the Beatitudes, "a sort of veiled interior biography of Jesus, a kind of portrait of his figure" (Joseph Ratzinger, Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration, 75). As disciples of Jesus Christ, Christians are called to assimilate to these characteristics of the life of Christ, so that they might allow Christ to live in and through them, as St. Paul writes in his Letter to the Colossians 2:20.
