When I was 18, I remember flipping through our Church bulletin and seeing an advertisement in the back for the local Visiting Nurses Association calling for volunteers to visit hospice patients. This was probably my first foray into volunteering, which would lay roots deep within me for the next 17 years. I called the volunteer coordinator and began training with the next cohort. Most of my peers were 50-60 years older than me. I learned a lot about death and dying, albeit in the classroom, and even got the chance to write my funeral wishes. Finally, I was ready, or least sufficiently trained, to begin visiting patients.
