Da Pacem: Cantores Sancti Ludovici

This chant was recorded at a live performance of a concert entitled The Music of the Crusades at St. Francis de Sales Church in St. Louis, Missouri, August 19, 2023.

Da pacem Domine (Give peace, Lord) is a votive antiphon written for use in the Sacred Liturgy and became very popular, particularly among the Crusaders. The text dates from the 6th or 7th century and is based on biblical verses from 2 Kings (20:19), 2 Paralipomenon (20:12,15) and Psalm 72 (vv.6–7). Pope Nicholas III issued a Bull in 1279 that ordered it to be sung sung at every Holy Mass before the Agnus Dei. In the Paris Breviary of 1643, it is given at Lauds and Vespers along with a Collect for Peace found in the Gelasian Sacramentary, as a Commemoratio de Pace per Annum.

The text has been the base for various musical compositions to be used inside or outside the liturgy. The more common Gregorian melody, from the 9th century, is elaborated slightly from the more rustic melody used by the Crusaders and sung by the Cantores Sancti Ludovici. Their liturgy and chant was based on that of the church in Jerusalem, whose Eastern roots had been less influenced by the work done in Carolingian era to adapt the Roman chant to that of the Frankish Church.
