The Virtues

The virtues are central to a life of Christian holiness. Pictured on this poster are the theological and cardinal virtues. The virtues help to form the soul and endow it with the spiritual strength necessary to live out the Christian life.

The theological virtues pertain directly to our relationship with God. Thus, at the center of the upper portion of the poster is a symbol of the Trinity. We are infused with the theological virtues at baptism. The theological virtues are therefore central to the Christian life.

The cardinal virtues pertain to life this side of eternity. They are called “cardinal” based on the Latin cardinalis, which carries the meanings of chief or principal, and also “that on which something turns.” The root of cardinalis is cardo, meaning hinge. The Christian moral life thus hinges or turns, principally on these four virtues. Accordingly, there are four hinges depicted along the edges of the lower part of the poster. Within Christianity, the virtues can be understood as those spiritual strengths which stem from our participation in the life of Jesus Christ. The cardinal virtues, therefore, help us to imitate the life of Christ and make His life and love present to the world.
