Product Information
This 10 oz insulated coffee mug is dedicated to Jesus’ adoptive father, St. Joseph, under the title, The Worker. Joseph is one of the few figures within the Christian Faith to have more than one Feast Day on the liturgical calendar. St. Joseph is also celebrated on March 19th under the title, Spouse of the Virgin Mary, a celebration which dates back to the 10th century. The May 1st celebration of St. Joseph, however, was instituted in 1955 by Pope Pius XII as a response to International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day. By instituting the feast of St. Joseph the Worker, Pius XII was reminding the human family that the meaning of human work is ultimately found in relationship to our Creator, and this in a twofold manner. First, that work was not intended by God to be punishment, but imitative of His own life as Creator. When carried out lovingly, work is one way the human creature, created in God’s image, expresses a creativity that mirrors the Divine Life and makes it present in our world. Secondly, that ultimately our work is aimed at the human creature’s relationship with and worship of the Creator God. For, just as on the 7th Day God rested from His work of creation, so too does the creature’s work culminate in its work being brought to the Eucharistic altar where the “fruit of the earth and work of human hands” is transubstantiated into the one sacrifice pleasing to the Father. Namely, that of the Incarnate Son. Not one word of St. Joseph’s is recorded in Scripture. Rather he is simply recognized as a working man, a carpenter, who expresses his love for God by attentively listening to His Word, and working to accomplish what he hears, and his example calls all of us to do the same.
The front of the mug is adorned by a heart ablaze with the fire of God’s Love, which St. Joseph lived out both through his chastity and integrity as the Blessed Virgin Mary’s “Most Chaste Spouse,” symbolized by the lily on the heart, and by his work as a carpenter which provided for the livelihood of the human family, symbolized by the carpenter’s tools surrounding the wording “Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” The back features the same fiery heart with the lily and carpenter’s tools at the very center, reminding those who see it that the virtue lived by Joseph both in his relationship with Jesus and Mary and by his carpenter’s work was animated by Divine Love.
