Not by Bread Alone-16 X 90

This table runner is designed for the Season of Lent. The verse Matthew 4:4 comes amidst Jesus’ temptation in the desert by Satan, an episode of the life of Christ we hear of on the First Sunday of Lent every year. Knowing Jesus is hungry after His 40-day fast, Satan tempts Him, saying, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread” (Matthew 4:3). Jesus responds with the verse displayed on the Table Runner, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). The verse serves as a reminder that the central purpose of the Season of Lent is to become less dependent upon the things of the world and more perfectly conformed to the will of God in our lives. It simultaneously reminds us that the ascetical practice of fasting is one of the principle ways we strive to grow in greater unity with Christ during the Season of Lent. 

The purple color of the table runner identifies the Season of Lent as a penitential season within the life of the Church, while the rose lining reminds us that even as we struggle amidst this penitential season, we look forward to the joy of the Resurrection and new life in Christ. A Cross elevated above an open Bible shadowing the passage reminds us that the Cross is both the key which opens us the whole of Scripture to us, and the central point around which the whole of salvation history turns. The nails and crown of thorns at the respective ends of the table runner remind us of the price the Incarnate Savior paid so that we might be availed of the opportunity to once again live in loving communion with God.
